Roofing in Medina, Ohio

Medina's homes lean 1970s and 1990s, and a good share are older than that around the Square. The city also has a written roofing rule most homeowners never hear about: one layover, and then the old roof has to come off.

What we know about Medina roofs

Census estimates from 2012 to 2016 put Medina's median year built at 1979. About 24 percent of homes went up in the 1970s and another 23 percent in the 1990s, while roughly 11 percent date to 1939 or earlier. That spread means we see first roofs, second roofs and old roofs with a layer still hiding underneath.

The Medina Public Square Historic District has been on the National Register since 1975, and much of what stands around the Square was rebuilt after an 1870 fire. Older homes on the streets near downtown often have steep pitches, dormers and chimneys, which take more care with flashing than a simple ranch roof.

Wind damage is easy to miss. A gust that breaks the seal under a row of shingles can leave them lying flat and looking normal from the ground, then the next storm lifts them off. After a windy summer like Medina's, photos from the roof are the only way to know.

On the roofs our crews see here: mostly architectural asphalt shingles, 6/12 to 8/12 pitch, one layer.

Medina's recent storms have been more wind than hail. The National Weather Service logged trees uprooted and snapped north and southwest of town on August 6, 2024, and roof damage about five miles west of the city on July 7, 2025, the same day an EF-0 tornado touched down to the west in Chatham and Lafayette townships. We found no confirmed hail report inside the city from 2024 to 2026.

The City of Medina issues its own Roof Permit and Zoning Certificate at 132 North Elmwood Avenue (330-722-9030). The city's form requires a tear-off once a roof has two or more layers, so only one layover is allowed, and it requires ice protection from the eave to at least 24 inches past the wall line. The building department inspects the ice protection and the finished roof. We confirm the permit with the city before work starts.
